At WGU, we have committed to changing lives for the better by expanding pathways to opportunity.

Marqus Hutchinson's story demonstrates how WGU's impact on just one individual can make a difference for many more. Marqus grew up in foster care in New York City's Harlem neighborhood and, after graduating from high school, joined the Navy.

During his service, Marqus acquired a solid background in information technology and, after he left the military, he knew he needed a degree to advance his career. After trying six universities, Marqus enrolled at WGU, where he completed both a bachelor's degree and an MBA.

After working as a consultant to the Departments of Defense and Justice, Marqus helped to found a telephone security company, Intelligent Waves, which currently has 300 employees. In addition, Marqus has become a WGU evangelist, starting with his own mother, who also completed bachelor's and master's degrees at WGU. Marqus continues to refer family, friends, and associates to the university, and he also serves on WGU's Northeast Region Alumni Advisory Board.

Marqus Hutchinson's story is what our Cultural Beliefs, One by One and Advancing Equity, look like. Marqus is a great reminder of the recurring impact each of us can have when we help just one student succeed and the value of each individual.

W.E.B. Du Bois, noted African-American sociologist, civil rights activist, author, and educator, said, "It is easy for us to lose ourselves in details in endeavoring to grasp and comprehend the real condition of a mass of human beings. We often forget that each unit in the mass is a throbbing human soul."

Preparing for success in an online program.
While WGU has offered online degree programs for over 20 years, the pandemic has caused many universities to switch to online schooling. As many people found out last year, doing school online is a little different than doing school in a traditional classroom. But don't worry. We've got your back.  Here are five ways to prepare for an online program that can help you have your greatest schooling success.
5 WAYS TO PREPARE

Speedometer
A real student's take on acceleration.
More and more colleges are offering "fast track" options that can help you graduate faster, but what is it really like to accelerate at WGU? Can you really complete courses faster? Do you have to dedicate 100% of your time to your program in order to truly speed things up? Here's Cesar Zayas'—Army lieutenant, full-time employee, father, and WGU grad—take on  what it's really like to accelerate at WGU.

Having the right degree can open doors to better jobs, higher income, and even increased job security. And the good news is that money does not have to be a barrier between you and the degree you want. In addition to  low, flat-rate tuitionscholarship opportunities, and financial aid options, WGU is helping our students earn a respected degree with little or no new student loan debt.  This change has helped so many students find the success that many other universities are starting to follow WGU's lead.

REDUCE STUDENT DEBT

There's a reason people pay good money to hire personal trainers—they help keep them on track to their fitness goals. (Even the most driven people sometimes need a little help or an extra boost to keep them motivated.) That is why WGU assigns every student a personal mentor. WGU's mentors are familiar with your specific degree, they understand the challenges of going to school, and they are there to help and encourage you every step of the way!
